I am sorry but in US the bell is only activated near train stations and train yards ! so people will always here a bell and not forget that a train is coming ,, but in the mainlines you don’t hear a bell, only horn
It’s standard procedure for conductors to sound both horn and bell when approaching a crossing in the US, unless it is a quiet zone, then only the bell is activated. Not just in yards or stations.
…. Bells are typically just a warning to bystanders. I work in MOW for BNSF, and we usually get the bells so that we know they are near. Also, just because it is a quiet zone, doesn’t mean they stay quiet, rules are meant to be broken. We have had Engineers and conductors tell us that whether its a quiet zone or not they will hit the whistle if they see us on the tracks.
